Betting Progression
Over the years, I have spent much time emphasizing the importance of money management and departure rules. And well I should. The stabilizing force to all our systems is in these two key factors.
That said, there is another factor to our play that cannot be underestimated: betting progressions. They should always reflect the strategy as well as your money management. For example, it is irresponsible to use the same buy-in and win goal with an up-as-you-win progression and an up-as-you-lose progression. When playing a martingale progression you ask for only a one-unit win with each progression. But with an aggressive up-as-you-win progression you may look for a 10- or 15-unit win!
Right now, I want to talk about the philosophy behind the progression. Up to now, up-as-you-win progressions in craps looked to increase their wins during the roll with one shooter. As the shooter makes number after number, the bet sizes increase higher. Why not? This is an effective way to mine a streak.
But what if we redesigned our betting progression to increase our bets both during a roll as well as from shooter to shooter? That is, what if we found a way to effectively increase our unit size from shooter to shooter as we won and decrease as we lost, without sacrificing profits with a big run on any one shooter?
But the major problem with the system was not the strategy, but the progression. All available progressions failed with this unique strategy because it couldn’t survive the downward fluctuations or truly capitalize on the streaks. But by strategically increasing or decreasing the unit size with each shooter and manipulating the bets of the strategy we soon realized the profits we knew were possible.
Think of it this way: In gambling, the strategy is the car and the progression is the fuel. You need a truly super-rich, high-powered fuel to properly run this strategy. We have re-discovered the importance of the betting progression in all of our systems. Until next time.
