Strategies to Play Texas Hold Em Well

Those who are new to poker would do well to start by learning to play Texas hold em. This popular poker game is easy to learn, as it does not require the card-counting proficiency of some other poker games. A few minutes of play will get the novice started with Texas hold em. A few hours will have him or her fairly comfortable with the game. The key to proficiency with Texas hold em strategy is in many hours of consistent practice.

A beginning poker player can learn best by playing at poker websites that offer the learning sessions at no charge. Online poker is advantageous, as the novice does not need to shuffle, deal or calculate who ended up with the winning hand. All those functions are handled by the poker site.

To play Texas hold em, participants start with something called posting. This means that players place antes and blinds to set the initial play amount. The game will have its own betting structure and limits. Then the dealer shuffles the standard 52-card deck, and gives each player two cards. Called the player’s pocket cards, these two are delivered face down for privacy.

The first round of betting starts with the player on the left of the blinds. In this "preflop" round any player can raise, call or fold. After the preflop, the dealer discards the card on the top of the deck, and then "flops" the next three cards so they are visible to all. The player on the dealer’s left starts another round, with any player able to take any of the flopped cards to form a hand with the cards they already have.

This round is followed by one identical, with one discarded card and then three flipped. Some Texas hold em games will now double bet size at this point. A third round of betting, called a river, now potentially has five flipped cards on the table for players to create poker hands. After one more round, the game goes to showdown. At this point, every player that has not folded must reveal his or her hand. The best hand wins.

The best basic strategy for playing Texas hold em begins at the preflop stage. The novice player should consider several factors. The number of players is important, as the more players there are the greater the competition will be. How much money the player has in his or her bankroll will play an important part in strategy as well as how much risk he or she is willing to take.

Baccarat is another game that is easy to learn. The objective of Baccarat is to create a hand of two or three cards that total nine. The winner is the player whose cards are closest to totaling nine. Numbered cards’ values are equal to their face, with the exception of the 10 card, which counts as zero. Jacks, queens and kings are counted as zero as well. An Ace is one point.

Since baccarat is totally a game of chance, baccarat strategy is limited. One idea is to play with as few card decks as possible. The standard baccarat game uses eight decks, while some mini games play with only six. Some players believe in flat betting. Because the player does not increase his or her bet with each hand, the risk is minimized and the money lasts longer. The latter assures longer play, which in theory increases the chance of a win. No matter which strategy a player chooses, Texas hold em is much more a game of skill and practice than baccarat, the latter counts almost solely on the luck of the draw.
